Mr. Bush...

While Mr. Bush makes our democracy look more like a "dumbocracy", he gave his final State of the Union address. In this speech he tried to make it look like he knew what he was talking about, but as usual he did not disappoint us with stating facts we already knew. The economy is in trouble and people are worried. Well of coarse we are all worried, and the fact that he is going to cut 151 "wasteful or bloated" government programs shows he knows a little something but, he is still funding a war that is useless. That is one thing he should cut if any is the war in Iraq. Thank god we don't have much time left under this great leader.

TIME: Obama's Win Reshapes the Race

With a win in South Carolina, Barack Obama has turned the presidential race back around. After proving the polls wrong about the percentage of white voters he would win the votes from in South Carolina Obama seems ready for Super Tuesday which is coming up. Shortly after the polls closed Hillary Clinton got on a plane and flew to Tennessee to get ready for the next campaign. Clinton seems eager to get the votes from the other 22 states on the 5th and not worried with the loss of South Carolina. She told Obama that they'll see what Florida brings them. Barack's win in South Carolina open some stronger light on his campaign. This was a much needed win for him and now he has to try and win the votes on the 5th as well as in Florida.

TIME: Indonesia's 100th Bird Flu Death

In Indonesia the 100th victim of the bird flu was recorded. A nine year old boy died after catching the virus on January 16th. Also a women died in the hospital after catching it on the 19th as well. Out of the 222 human deaths from the bird flu, Indonesia has contributed to half of them. Both the victims were from the area outside of Jakarta, Indonesia. Two more people in there 30s have been tested positive and being tested on it now. This is the worst out break in the world as of right now. Researchers need to hurry up and find some sort of medication to stop this outbreak or at least keep it from killing people. The deaths are going to keep rising unless we can find a vaccine to put an end to this.

Immigration Nation Review

  • Tamar Jacoby's article "Immigration Nation", was a great view on the immigration issue in the United States at this time. The on going question about what we should do with the illegal immigrants and how do we keep them out of our country. Are they as bad as people make them seem? Jacoby answers these questions in his article along with many others.
  • In the article there are five key issues. First, the number or Illegal immigrants compared to the number of legal immigrants in the United States. Second, any new slots should be temporary: workers would be admitted, perhaps without family, for a period of two or three or six years and then go home. Third, High skilled and Low skilled workers are both needed. Fourth, whether or not to build a fence to keep out illegal immigrants out of the United States. Fifth and final, whether or not illegal immigrants here already should be allowed to stay and live here or not and become citizens.
  • In the article there are many facts and statistics to help answer the key issues. Some facts being: Foreign men are less likely to be unemployed then a native born. 2/3 of illegal immigrants have income tax withheld from their paychecks, and the Social Security Administration collects some $7 billion a year that goes unclaimed, most of it thought to come from unauthorized workers. North Carolina is the fastest-growing foreign-born population in the country. Between 2002 and 2012 Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. economy is expected to create some 56 million new jobs, half of which will require no more than a high school education.
  • In the article he says, "The political stars will realign, perhaps sooner than anyone expects, and when they do, Congress will return to the tasks it has been wrestling with: how to translate the emerging consensus into legislation to repair the nation's broken immigration system." And another time saying, "The only practical solution is to give these unauthorized workers and their families a way to earn their way onto the right side of the law."
  • This article is well written and supported by numerous facts. The facts and opinions are on the money for this topic and i highly suggest you take a few minutes of your time and read this article.

Immigration Nation

Immigration is a huge part of our Nation. Everyday in the news there is a story about immigration, more illegal immigrants than anything else, but it is still a big deal. My own personal experience with immigrants isn't a bad one. I work with immigrants everyday, some legal and others not. While the ever growing illegal rate climbs higher and higher, i believe people are afraid to lose their job. The only reason for the feeling of threat is job security. They know that the immigrants are willing to work for less and they usually work harder at the job given. I personally don't feel threatened by these people.
